How, not What - Enhanced eBooks Help Readers

Enhanced eBooks are a fickle bunch - while there's no right way to do them, it can be difficult to maintain a sense of "enhancement". Typically, these books fall under the scope of either education or child-related (or usually both) and help the reader understand a situation better.

For instance, Nancy Duarte created an enhanced eBook called Resonate, which, as leelefever writes, "[Resonate] is wonderful example because it uses the full menu of enhanced ebook options, from audio and video, to interactive quizzes, graphs and behind-the-scenes content. [...] why read about famous speeches when you can watch or listen to them in an enhanced ebook?" It's true - part of the grandeur of a speech is not simply what is being said, but also how - and enhanced eBooks are all about the how.

From Martha Stewart's Cookies to How Computers Work, Multi-Touch Version, Enhanced eBooks are all about showing how something works. I think this is what distinguishes it, totally, from a typical eBook - there is something that is expanding on not just what, but how. Want to learn how a conductor works? An Enhanced eBook can show you. Want to learn how to help the environment? Al Gore's eBook will be a great accompaniment. By adding a "how" to a book's creation, Enhanced eBooks give better understanding of the reading and of the book's ideas than simply a typical book or eBook.
